Yesterday, especially when I went uphill, my old car made a chugging noise that got worse by the hour. What?

What is going on? The other words for the noise could be sputtering or ticking.

It's a Toyota Sequoia 2002 with 120,000 miles on it. At first, when I stepped on the gas and was going 65 mph up a hill, it made the noise and eight hours later as I was finishing the trip, it made the noise when I stepped on the gas on flat ground, going 20 miles per hour.

It does not make the noise going downhill. The more I step on the gas pedal, the louder the noise.

I don't know whether I should be driving this car. Yesterday, I just put on my flashers and drove slowly.

What are some of the things that could be going wrong. I paid $4000 for repairs this year and just added JBA headers because my exhaust manifold was cracked.

Update:

All of the indicators are normal.

Update 2:

Oil was changed last week. I've been putting in Mobil high mileage synthetic.

Update 3:

When oil was changed, inspection included radiator hose, engine air filter, oil and fluid leaks, battery, belts, engine cooling system, exhaust system, drive shaft, constant velocity drive axle boots what ever that is.

Update 4:

I just put in high octane gas and the results didn't seem to be any different.

Update 5:

The problem turned out to be that the exhaust shop forgot to tell me to come back to have my bolts on my new JBA headers torqued after 750 miles and they fell out.

I'm surprised you don't have a check engine light on, if you do, go to a advanced, orileys, checkers, pep boys or other auto parts store and have a code scanner hooked up, it's free normally. If it was your air filter or fuel filter you'd get a system to lean or rich code. Did you check your oil level? If there's no check engine light it may be hard to tell. Open your hood and listen for a sucking noise, this would point to a vac leak, and will cause sputtering. If you can't find the leak but can hear it, spray part cleaner around the intake manifold. I'll keep an eye on your post for more details.

appears like the catalytic converter is clogged up. u can attempt this via getting a warmth gun and have automobile working time-honored temps element to the front of the converter and then to the rear of it. it is going to study a lil bit warmer in direction of the rear. u could additionally attempt it via a rigidity gauge via unscrew front oxygen sensor and screw interior the gauge and hit the gas to 2500 rpm watch the gauge and carry it there for a min and the gauge shouldnt attain above 2.5psi on the gauge or it is undesirable as properly. only appears like its clogged up u could get greater suitable gas mileage and enhance horse potential as quickly as fixed and replaced. even in spite of the undeniable fact that that's a small engine automobile... additionally watch the rpm gauge does the engine rev severe or does it stay low? if the rpms get severe and engine is racing however the motor vehicle wont go speedier then ur tranny is slipping...... the bands are going out u would desire to attempt some lucas tranny stuff to dodge slipping in spite of the undeniable fact that it sounds to be extraordinarily undesirable if it is the case so im hoping thats no longer it or ull be wanting new tranny for long eventualy it wont pull not greater. additionally each each now and then it relies upon how steep this hill is and the cost u started up it... u would desire to attempt putting it in decrease equipment to work out if it is going to kick down greater

It could be a lot of things. I would suspect the fuel is not getting to the engine, First thing I would do is change the fuel filter, change the air filter and see if that helps.

  • you mention a noise a few times but never describe that noise. it could be vital information. you could be hearing detonation from a lean mixture......
