  • Need help understanding why my motion sensor lights disabled another light?

I have three lights outside, one front door and two on either side of my garage door. I thought I could replace the garage door lights with motion sensor lights, which I did. Now my front door light won't turn on, but the motion sensor lights works just fine. All of these lights are turned on with one switch. Is there an explanation for why this has occurred? If I replace my front door light with a motion sensor light, will it start working or should I buy two new non-motion sensor lights for the garage area and restore the situation back to what it was?

  • Will financial aid offers differ for 2 students with the same need when one applicant is more desirable?

My daughter needs a lot of financial aid and one book said to focus on schools where her scores and grades are in the top quartile of applicants. These schools say they are need blind and meet full-need, so the only thing I can think is that she would get more scholarships and fewer loans. Is it possible that the total package amount would differ as well?

  • Can my actuator be broken if my key unlocks all doors but the door I stick my key into?

I have a toyota sequoia and they are well known for having back door problems. The handle broke off and my son replaced it.

The handle opened the rear door once. I stuck my friend's ping-pong table in the back and shut the door. When we went to remove the table from the car, the back door latch seemed to pull on the hatch lock, but the door wouldn't open. The table is one foot away from the back door and did not cause this problem.

I kept on locking and unlocking the doors and while all of the other doors unlocked and could be opened, the back one wouldn't open.

I've been reading about the actuator, but the material is over my head. So, while I don't think the problem is the actuator, what I want to know is can I rule that out as the source of the problem, if when I stick my key in the rear door lock, the key unlocks the other four doors on the car and they can all be opened? The back door of the Toyota Sequoia does not have an unlock button. Obviously something electrical is working to unlock the four doors. If the actuator were broken, could these four doors still be unlocked? Or, it is possible that the actuator could be broken in such a way that the four doors unlock but the rear door doesn't? Most Toyota Sequoia problems seem to be with the handle and the hatch lock.

  • My son will apply to 3 in-state college engineering programs? To what other affordable schools should he apply?

We live in Colorado, so Mines, CU and CSU are on our list. Due to the two recessions and tightening credit, we have no money and will not be able to take loans.

I was wondering if any other engineering schools are as affordable as the state schools, specifically RPI, Lehigh, Georgia Tech and Case Western. He has a 31 on the ACT, fives on his AP exams, a 4.0 weighted, and in the top 10% of his class. The AP exams will eliminate one year of study. Mines will still cost about $80,000-$85,000, a sum he'll have to earn, other than the $15,000 he should get from the federal government.

Is there any school in the U.S. that will provide a free ride to a typical engineering applicant? Where else should we be applying?

  • My hot water heater works but when I try to drain it, nothing comes out. Can I do any repair for free?

After ten years, I finally had a few minutes to check my hot water heater. I read yesterday that there is a pressure relief valve. So, I shut off the cold water and lifted it and nothing came out. Then I went to drain the tank. I turned the knob to pilot and turned that little red lever 1/4 from maybe twelve o'clock to 3 o'clock and nothing happened.

Due to the economy, two options are out, calling a plumber and replacing the hot water heater. Are there any other options besides leaving the heater alone and hoping for the best?

  • If Christmas presents get lost in transit, should the sender feel obligated to purchase new presents?

USPS lost presents I sent to my two nieces. I didn't insure them, but I did replace them.

Now a relative of mine dropped off presents for my children at a location that ships Fed Ex. They were in the Fed Ex system with a weight, tracking number, arrival date, but only one out of four bars. The location doesn't seem to be able to find them and Fed Ex says its computers show that it didn't receive them. Fed Ex says that the data in the system is what goes in when the third party arranges to ship packages. It doesn't seem like my relative will be able to locate them and furthermore it doesn't seem like any company is going to take responsibility for the probable theft. To make matters even stickier, my relative works for the company that lost her package. The package contained items she bought at her workplace.

What is the right thing to do in this situation?

  • My extension cord won't plug into my Christmas lights. What should I do?

I just hung Christmas lights over my garage door and over my front door. The garage door lights plug into the extension cord. Then the extension cord is supposed to plug into the front door lights and the door lights are then plugged into a different extension cord that plugs into the wall. The extension cord will not plug into the front door lights because the cord has a fat and skinny prong whereas the lights have two skinny holes. What should I do?

Garage door **** extension cord xxxx front door ****extension cord **** inside wall.

    xxxx= problem

  • Is there any reason to paint the underside of a deck?

We have to replace a few pine boards on our deck and my son noticed that the underside of the deck was painted and now wants me to paint our three new boards. I have surplus deck paint, but I don't feel like doing something needlessly. I understand that it can't hurt, but can it help in any way or should I forgo this process?

  • Which automotive stores have the best prices?

I have three stores in my neighborhood and I've seen a few others nearby. There's Pep Boys, Autozone, Carquest, O'Reillys and two others. I was wondering in your experience, which ones have low prices and which ones have high prices? I'm just going to buy Bondo this time, but in the long run, I just want to shop at a store with reasonable prices.

  • Does your mini fridge freeze everything if you turn it all the way up?

I want to buy lots of frozen pizzas which are on sale, but I need to use my mini fridge to store them. I was wondering if it would keep them frozen if I tried to use it as a freezer and turned the cold knob to high. I'll test it with a cup of water, but only if some people think it will work.

  • Yesterday, especially when I went uphill, my old car made a chugging noise that got worse by the hour. What?

What is going on? The other words for the noise could be sputtering or ticking.

It's a Toyota Sequoia 2002 with 120,000 miles on it. At first, when I stepped on the gas and was going 65 mph up a hill, it made the noise and eight hours later as I was finishing the trip, it made the noise when I stepped on the gas on flat ground, going 20 miles per hour.

It does not make the noise going downhill. The more I step on the gas pedal, the louder the noise.

I don't know whether I should be driving this car. Yesterday, I just put on my flashers and drove slowly.

What are some of the things that could be going wrong. I paid $4000 for repairs this year and just added JBA headers because my exhaust manifold was cracked.

I use browser tools to clean out whatever they clean out, but the Internet still runs slowly. I don't like having to restart my computer so often. Is there anything else I can do? I run XP and mozilla or netscape.

  • how do some foreclosure properties end up as auctions and others as bank-owned?

In my zip code, we have about 93 properties that are foreclosures according to Trulia. Most of them are listed as auctions, but some are listed as bank owned.

I don't know anything and so I would think that the lending company would own all of the houses. Are the bank owned properties just not yet scheduled for auction? Or have they failed to be auctioned?

  • If bank foreclosure auctions occur weekly then why are there 93 foreclosure properties for auction in my zip c?

Each week, about 12 properties in my zip code are added to the foreclosure list through RealtyTrac. I'm wondering why there are 93 properties listed as auction properties in Trulia which gets its information through RealtyTrac. Why don't they clear out each week?

My guess is that no one wanted to buy them because the bank wanted the outstanding mortgage amount, which is more than they are worth. Realizing this, is the bank going to hold onto them forever or does it lower its asking price? What is going on with these properties?

  • How do I get rid of a real fur muff given to me ages ago by a grandparent?

Way before real fur became politically incorrect, my grandma gave me a girl's hand muff. I have no idea what kind of fur was used to make it. It is light and medium tan. My family will never have any use for this item and I don't know who would or how I should get rid of it. Any ideas?

  • A spray cleaning product called "The Works" stained and ruined two counter tops. How do I fix this?

My home has beige Formica counter tops and this spray product drips down the bottle. When I set the bottle on the counter, it created a blue ring on the counter top. I don't have hundreds of dollars to replace counter tops, so I need to turn the ring back to beige.

In the small print on the back of the bottle, it says not to set the bottle on various surfaces including counter tops. Unfortunately, I discovered the problem after it was created. The ingredients are sulfamic and oxalic acid.
