Does religion make you dumb, or do you have to be dumb to be religious?

You're more likely to find your way out of religion, on some cases, if you're more educated/intelligent. That's just statistics. I know plenty of smart theists and plenty of dumb atheists though, so it's certainly not always the case.

Unfortunately it is not necessary to be dumb to be religious. If it was then religion would never have grasped the power it has and still holds on to. Neither would it have got such a hold over so many people. Intelligence and belief or lack of it dont' of necessity go together,

I wouldn't call it dumb. I would call lack of critical thinking that would make people religious. Also, people who are easily intimidated can be converted to any religion. It's like vote for me or you would see a mushroom cloud over NY City. Same thing with religion. Convert to my religion or you would burn in hell.

Religion makes you dumb. Many smart people are inflicted with religion against their will at an early age, and never develop the skills to crtically analyze it.

Neither. I have too many very smart religious friends to equate belief with dumbness. I don't understand why they are believers, but they're far from stupid.

Split down the middle. You can be dumb and be religious or be smart become religious and then become stupid.

Religion when practiced apropriately makes you intelligent... when practicied inapropriately, it makes you dumb.
