Are bison hunts any good?
I have a lifelong dream to go cape buffalo hunting, and I know they do various bison hunts in the 2 grand range. How are these hunts? Are they fair chase? How close are the shots and would they be a prime target for an african game caliber? I'm assuming they're mostly guided hunts? (which I prefer)
I have a Stevens 200 in .300 Win Mag which would probably suffice, but I want to buy something .375H&H Magnum on up and would love to get hunting experience before spending mega bucks in Africa. This of course is all long term thinking as I have nowhere near enough funds at the moment, but I'm thinking a bison hunt may be right up my allie. Would a bison be a good candidate for use of one of the big, heavy magnums with open sights?

Yes, a 300 win mag will work fine for american bison. Getting a tag for one will take you a few years, generally. you could go execute one at a ranch, but i dont really consider it sporting.
you would not be allowed to hunt cape buffalo or any other dangerous african game with a 300 win mag.
bison can be challenging to hunt, mostly due to the terrain they typically inhabit. they can see you coming from a long way off.
i still get the impression you have a bridge nearby....

If you are wanting to shoot a bison simply as a test of your big magnum then that will probably work ok. If you are wanting to shoot a bison as a sporting experience then you will be disappointed as it is usually like shooting fish in a barrel.

It's possible to kill bison with one of the larger, high powered air rifles. Here is a video:

Your .300 Winchester Magnum is more than up to the task.
