Has anyone tried a formula thickener ?

If so, did it work for you? I purchased a can of karicare formula thickener today. My 5 week old son is on karicare gold formula but is starting to throw up quite regularly. still feeding great and putting on lots of weight, a little too much weight to be honest. Another parent suggested that we tried this thickener as she has had great success in stopping all the spit up for her son. Has anyone else tried it? How did it go. I am going to try just one scoop in a bottle tonight, I thought that maybe f he digests his food a little slower he may drink a bit less. he is wanting far more than the recommended amounts and is putting on quite a bit of weight. What do you all think?

I think you should discuss this with the baby's doctor.

It doesn't really make a difference, the anti-reflux formula just has a thickener mixed in with it already. Personally I would stick with the same formula and add the thickener, then you won't waste any formula you've already bought, and you're not changing the formula (which sometimes upsets baby's tummy). Other things to think about - have the baby sitting relatively upright when you feed him, not lying flat in your arms. Keep him upright for half an hour after each feed - either by holding him upright against your shoulder, putting him in a baby carrier, or in a relatively upright baby bouncer seat. Lift the head end of his cot/moses basket by putting a rolled up towel or pillow under the head end of the mattress.

I wouldn't try anything or switch anything to with your baby's feeding without talking it through with your baby's doctor first. Most likely your son is spitting up a completely normal amount if he's still putting on a weight. If you are concerned that your baby's spit up is abnormal and that he may have acid reflux, then the doctor needs to see him anyway. Either way formula thickener will not do a thing. Babies this young are not meant to digest their food slowly and you should not try to change how much or how often he drinks. The best way to keep your infant at his healthiest is by feeding him the most natural way you can. Regardless of what some mothers think, formula fed babies still need to be fed on demand just like breast fed infants.

Too much weight too fast is NOT good for a baby. Toss the 'formula thickener' (too dangerous to his health) and feed him baby rice cereal; mix a small amount with milk, feed it to him with a rubber coated baby spoon and then just his normal formula.

NEVER add anything extra to formula..anything extra must be fed with a spoon.

The spitting up.......too much too fast and NOT being burped during and after every feeding.

I had a neighbor (in an apartment), years ago, who fed her son every time he opened his mouth. I heard him cry a bit once in a while and thought...ok, the cry sounds like a newborn (which he was). As I walked by her unit....she was also going somewhere and had her son in a car seat......I looked at him and asked her "how old is your baby?" She said "2 months". He sounded like a 2 month old but was already out growing his car seat because of her constantly feeding him (he was so heavy that she couldn't hardly hold him)....he looked like a 9 month infant. I felt so sorry for the baby.....2 months of age and already obese.

Have you tried Enfamil A+ Thickened formula? That what I use on my son. He was just on regular formula, but was spitting up alot. I put him on the Enfamil A+ Thickened and it worked like a charm. He`s 3.5 months now and he`s still on the thickened formula. He`s spitting up alot again now, but he`s also got acid reflux. Give it a try, it might work for your little sweetheart ..

I don't think it's a very good idea to use formula thickener because it can lead to aspiration. If your baby's formula is too thick, it may not pass on the nipple hole and the hole is very small for a very good safety precaution. If you want to prevent reflux, elevate your baby's head after feeding, and prop him up for a while. Try small frequent feedings as compared to big feedings because it can only lead to more reflux. I wish you the best.

I tried Enfamil's Restfull Sleep and all it did was cause constipation. Remember that kids tend to gain weight right before a growth spurt and based on age, he is due for a major growth spurt soon.
