is it ok to give dogs pork bones to chew?
I was at the grocery store and wanter to buy some bones for her to chew, are pork bones ok? I know that chicken and turkey bones are a no-go, because they are hollow and can splinter the dogs throat. what about pork though? I assume because they are mammals that it is ok, but feel like I have heard otherwise somewhere...

Any raw bones are excellent for your dog. They clean their teeth, give their gums and jaw a workout and prevent gum disease. My puppy loves chicken bones (necks, wings, drumstick, even whole chickens), kangaroo tails, lamb tail etc etc. Keep away from recreational bones (eg. marrow bones)which are too dense and big and can cause teeth to break. Ensure you buy the right size bone for your dog. The right bone will depend on their size and how they eat. Ensure your dog chews the bone and doesn't just try to swallow it whole - this indicates the bone is too small. If your dog chews everything, you can afford to get smaller bones, whereas if they wolf everything down quickly you will need to get bigger ones.

It could take more than a few hours, and you should watch for any and all behavior changes in your dog. If he appears to be in any pain at all, he should be taken to a vet immediately. Small shards of bone can puncture the digestive tract, which can be deadly. Many dogs (especially out in rural areas) chew up bones and poop them out and live happily ever after. As you already know though, this is not always the case. Do not let your dog chew on cooked or dried bones of any kind, ever.

Any RAW bone is fine for a dog - however you want to avoid weigh-bearing bones of large livestock ie cows as these are the cause of broken and chipped teeth.
Chicken, turkey, duck, pork, venison, beef, lamb, goat bones are all fine. Just give her one appropriate to your dogs' size. For instance, I wouldn't give my 35kg Dalmatian a small chicken wing. He'd more than likely just swallow it whole without chewing it; There lies the dangers of bones.

Pork bones from a pork chop usually come to a very sharp point, so that could be bad, the round bone in a ham is a perfect bone for a dog, and they love them. Oh and do you think a coyote worries about crunching through the bones when it steals a chicken from a hen house...

Raw bones are great for dogs, chicken bones only splinter if cooked, so they are ok to give RAW. I would go to a butcher.

If they are non-weight bearing, raw bones, then yes - they're fine.
BTW - raw chicken & turkey bones are absolutely fine for your dog.

As long as they are Raw, yes
Even chicken and turkey bones are safe, but they have to be raw.

as a vet tech I have witnessed far too many times dogs that have had to have emergency surgery because of the owner feeding it bones of any sort (short of bone shaped biscuits) dogs do not digest animal bones completely and this causes intestinal problems, if not the stomach then when they go to pass the bones and tear their rectum. never under any circumstance should you offer your dog bones from a skeletal system period. there are hundreds of treats for dogs on the market. in fact people food of any kind can cause pancreatic problems for you dog. I know you mean well and just want to treat your dog to something special, skeletal bones are in no way a treat for their digestion. not trying to be harsh just telling you the way vet's see it, buy him a big box of dog biscuits and let him sit on the couch with you, that's a treat he wont have a belly ache from hope this helps
