How hard is it on your hair to highlight every 2 to 3 months?
I usually try to go as long as I can without dyeing my hair or putting in highlights/lowlights to be gentler on it and to keep costs down, but it just starts to drive me nuts when I can see "dull-looking" color growing out of my roots.
I don't dye my hair drastic colors. I always have my stylist match the base/overall color to my brown roots as close as she can, and then I usually have her put in tones of red finely dispursed throughout my whole head of hair so it looks as natural as it can ... but with some COLOR.
The last time I had a full cut and color like that was in July.
I did a cut and red highlights only at the end of August (I didn't do the overall base color).
Now that the color has faded some, I can notice that I can see where my natural dull hair color has grown out from my roots and it drives me bananas. But I try my best to take care of my hair so I was mostly wondering how long your should wait in-between dyes that is best?
Or since it has been colored before, then it doesn't matter?

I think if you treat your hair with a good treatment (Redken, Kerastase or Joico just to make examples), it's OK to dye your hair every 2. or 3. month.
Especially your ends, because they are the part of your hair thats going to be most damaged after the coloring sessions.
OR/AND you can use a toner just to make your haircolor less dull!
OR the new Joico K-pak Chrome color system is ammonia free and will not damage your hair... The also have a low ammonia series... the colors are built on Joicos very successful treatment deep-penetrating reconstructor so it also gives your hair treatment while you're dying it.
Good luck!

Coloring your hair darker than your natural color is not damaging to your hair. It is just a deposit of color on top of the hair shaft. Hair suffers the most damage when it is bleached, which opens the cuticle and strips the pigmentation out. You should, however, use heat styling products if you blow-dry, flat iron, or use a curling iron on your hair. Depending on the thickness of your hair you can use anything from a spray to a serum.

I don't think it will damage your hair, I bleach my hair about every three months and my hair is very healthy. Just make sure to condition your hair if you think it may be getting weaker or ask your stylist for a deep conditioning treatment.
