Video editing software? For fan videos on Mac?

I want to make fan videos for shows/movies, like the ones you can find on YouTube. I've done it before on a windows but the software gave my computer viruses and now I have a Mac anyways. What software can I use to make clips out of DVDs and then edit them in something like iMovie? Or should I use something else besides iMovie too?

I don't mind paying as long as it works and isn't *too* expensive.

This is an example of what I'm looking for, but for a mac.
