What is the matter with Star Alliance?

Well, I guess every slightly experienced traveler knows what is and what does Star Alliance do. Sooo...

I was reading about their Round-the-World fare, and I started to wonder: how can they sell an almost 40,000-mile long ticket, with up to 16 flights, for about US$ 5,000.00? I mean, it's the same as a full fare New York - Zürich or something like that, isn't it?

Do you guys have any idea on how can Star Alliance and its member airlines afford this... total madness?

What's wrong with offering a low fare? If you check the prices for round trip flights to destinations that are half way around the world, which is pretty much the same distance traveled as an around the world fare, you'll find that you can buy a discounted ticket for a little more than $1,000, depending on the time of year.

Paying $5,000 to travel around the world is a very good price, but the airlines still make money and hardly anyone except business travelers or uneducated flyers would pay for a full fare ticket on most long haul flights.

Round the world fares are cheaper since you are buying access to 16 flights at the same time some which you will no use for months. at the same time the cost on the airlines is heavily reduced since the flights are booked way ahead of time, allowing them to predict their needs and hence saving them millions.
