Beagle Training..Need Help!?

Hey everyone, i have a beautiful, loving beagle, However She has some issues ( we do plan on putting her in training at the end of the month) We got her when she was about 1 1/2 years and she is now just over 2, She had so many homes because Guess people couldn't handle her,she has been hit ( previous owners) and i think has some issues from that. She is normally a pretty good girl. but Things I would really like to try and fix ( because I have 2 kids and one on the way and she becomes a handful, and I really really really don't want to have to give her up but at times it seems we might have to) Is

Jumping on people when they come in the door, and barking at them.

Stealing food from the kids, table, or counters.

she thinks she is the pack leader and i don't know how to get her to understand she is not.

I love her to pieces but she gets to the point where i have to lock her up when we have food around and she barks and howls. any ideas on how to work with her?

Update:

@ stop......We got her like this, we have been trying to train her, but she HAD been abused by one of the many peopel that owned her ( we are her 8th home in 2 years) so the training has nOTHINg to do with me!

Put food on the table to "set a trap", then watch her. When she grabs it, scold her or put her in a room alone. Then if she doesn't, reward her and praise her lavishly. Don't reward her from teh food on the table.

Okay, for jumping, get people to come in and when she jumps, make them ignore her if she jumps because she wants attention. If not, get people to come in and have her on leash. Make her sit and with a treat tell her "no jump" or something like that and then reward her or something. If she jumps, scold her sternly.

For barking, if she barks, get a treat and when she is focused on the treat get people to walk in. If she doesn't bark, reward her. IF she does say, "no" sternly.

You have to show her that YOU are the pack leader. Make her take meals after you have taken yours, go through doors first, make her sit to get her meals. THat's all I can think of for now!

    Hope it helps!

Cesar Millan has great advice on his website (listed below) and in his books. I suggest you get one of his books at a bookstore or library. He talks a lot about top dog.

Please don't give up on the dog. If you do, she will only be killed. That's not fair. Look into what Cesar has to say. Her issues are due to your not training her and your not being top dog. Don't punish her for that. You need to change how you react to her. That's the only way she will learn. It's not her fault. She's just acting like a dog. You have to get he to follow your lead and become top dog.

You can also call a dog behaviorist and they can help you.
