New Computer - Should I Upgrade to Windows 7 Or Keep XP?
I am switching to desktop, I already have windows XP and it seems OK, but how will it limit my performance in the short term? If I get a new motherboard and cpu, gpu, RAM what might not work, or will it be safe to start with XP and invest in 7 later? Might I need to wait until I can get both or settle with yesterday's hardware?
So I should make sure my motherboard is win7 compatible... but will some things like newer processor not work correctly with xp?

XP has support from MS till 2012. By then Windows 8 will be out. I would stay with with XP currently and save the money and jump when it gets released.
On the other issue, almost all hardware you buy today will work with W7. Just choose mainstream products and you will have no issues.
Btw, the most used OS around the world is still XP hands down!
I'm getting this next month:
Rampage III Formula
980x i7
6GB Mushkin ridgeback
120GB Mushkin Callisto SSD
Enermax revolutions 85+ 950 SLI PSU
4 VC 300GB raid0
No problem to run XP on it, although I will have to tweak Xp to run the SSD efficiently and I'll have to manually run garbage collection.
Good luck!

If you bought a new computer with xp (off lease happens often) then you will need to do a clean install of windows 7. If you build your own computer make sure the mobo is windows 7 capable. XP is still the most stable at the moment. 7 i hear is good as well but for an xp computer to go to windows 7 you must do a custom install...you can't just upgrade...it will mess up a lot of things and be prepared for a lot of blue screens if you try. CLEAN INSTALL

Windows XP is approaching 10 years old and will no longer be supported in the future. If it's a new computer, it should already come with Windows 7, and if you are building your own, you should still get 7.

From the Microsoft domicile windows 7 Pre-Order FAQ question: i'm working domicile windows XP, am i able to enhance to domicile windows 7? answer: Microsoft designed domicile windows 7 improve media for domicile windows Vista. A shopper with domicile windows XP can purchase domicile windows 7 improve media yet ought to returned up their records, clean deploy, and then reinstall their purposes. So definite you may improve yet you will ought to do it extra like a clean deploy (which for my area is the extra proper thank you to circulate besides). you will only ought to scrupulously backup your device with the aid of fact that is not precisely the classic improve technique.
