My wife uses the Parallel The New American Standard Bible/The Amplified Bible, which are excellent Bible translations to read to study the Holy Scriptures. ChristianBooks.com/Bibles sells this parallel Bible containing both the Amplified Bible and New American Standard Bible for only $14.99. I enjoy using the New King James and the Amplfied Bibles: Christianbooks.com/bibles has a parallel Bible containing both translations in one for $29.99. Once your at there site, just type in parallel bibles, and scroll down to Amplified & NASB Parallel Bible or NKJV/Amplified Parallel Bible Hardcover Large Print. At Maranatha, the church we attend, Pastor Ray Bentley, as many other Pastors-teach from the New King James. If your Mother is studying the Bible on the internet, biblegateway.com is a very helpful source, for it provides her with over 10 different translations of the Bible to learn from.

Perhaps there is no 'best' translation, it could depend on the person reading it. I started out using the New International Version (NIV). It is easy to read and has clear footnotes. As time went on, after my 'conversion' and I started getting my head around 'Religion' and all the different Bible versions, I realised each version has its weak and strong points.

I have included a couple of web sites, you can check out various versions, to see which one you, or a 25 year old mom of 2, prefer.

    www.e-sword.net.

    www.gotquestions.org.

eg. "Question: "Why are there so many Bible translations, and which is the best?"

Answer: The fact that there are so many English Bible translations is both a blessing and a problem. It is a blessing in that the Word of God is available to anyone who needs it in an easy-to-understand, accurate translation. It is a problem in that the different translations can create controversy and problems in Bible studies, teaching situations, etc. The differences between the translations can also be a subject of great division within the church body.

It is probably wise to have access to at least two or three of the major translations."

The best English translation is the King James Version. It is best because it is the most studied and most concordances use it.

Other commentaries must be measured against the King James Version. Look for things like them adding the word "slave" all over the place. The King James uses the word "slave" properly twice. Any more than this are people adding racist garbage to the translation.

The New King James has slave in it twice and treats Ezekiel chapter 13 with the proper wording. Ezekiel 13:20 is a great place to check your version. If your version talks about magic charms and birds, beware.

John chapter 1 verse 1 is also another big verse. It is the context for the book being written and to mess with it like some commentary, is just ugly and sickening to me.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This verse unlocks the Gospel for many people. By me just asking you what this means to you, your distance in your quest to find God can be measured.

Bible.com is a great site. They use King James Version as the default and do not include some of the more flawed commentaries.

Why did you mention your children? How old are they? Bible stories for children are readily available. The New American Bible is easy to read. Study Bibles are also a good thing to have, they have more explanatory notes.

The New American Standard is easy to read (doesn't have the thees and thous of old English in it like the KJV). It is written more in a manner of how we speak today. There are also Bibles that are geared more towards moms, with little footnotes and inspirational comments by other Christian moms.

    New King James Version

I prefer the King James when quoting passages on here, but the NIV for myself. Your best bet is to get a good Bible with comments to help you make sense of all the Shakespearianesque language (it was written in 1610 KJV)

NLT (New Living Translation) is very readable. If you read it aloud, it sounds normal. Don't get lost in the Bible aisle. I find it a troubling place, that aisle. Very troubling, indeed...
