Hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid question...?

To make hydrochloric acid you need sulfuric acid and salt (sodium chloride), they made this back in the time of renaissance but i have no clue how they did it. Could anyone please explain?

Or if you have another way just post it (without the use of electrolysis please).

Update:

That does work too, but there is no way to get hydrogen chloride without electrolysis, or without hydrochloric acid.

The equation for this reaction is:

    2NaCl(s) + H2SO4(conc) →heat → Na2SO4 + 2HCl

The gaseous HCl - in this form called hydrogen chloride - is collected by dissolving in water. This produces the hydrochloric acid solution.
