Question about getting around in NYC?
My husband and I are visiting NYC for the first time ever and we are wanting to see everything we possibly can while there for our 5 day trip. We are staying in Time Square so I know there will be subways near but we want to go from like Time Square to Radio City Hall then to the Rockefeller Center then to the Empire State Building and lots of other places. I know they are only about a half mile apart but can you take cabs between them or a subway that short of a distance. We aren't trying to be lazy but we plan to try to go to like 10 places in one day (not go in just see the outside of most of them) and if you add it up that is miles of walking. Will cabs take you just 1 mile or do you have to be going further? Advice on getting around quicker would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The subway or buses will be cheaper and far more efficient for you. Both are safe to use. You'll want to get a metrocard: http://www.mta.info/metrocard/ and here's a map of the subway to help you plan: http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
And, yes, you can take the subway from one stop to the next, there is no "minimum". Cabs do have a minimum charge ($2.50 for just getting in) and it applies even if you're just going a block. This calculator will show you the cost of taking a cab in NYC: http://nyc.taxiwiz.com/?lang=en You'll see it adds up fast! You can read more about cab fares here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab...
Enjoy your trip!

Times Square, Radio City, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, Central Park are all contiguous sites. It would be better to plan a trip around these walking. Empire State Building is a ten to fifteen minute walk from Times Square. As is Grand Central Station in a different direction. A cab would save about half that time. Other places are further and you may want to ride there. Cabs will be happy to take you even the shortest of distances. The Subway can be a speedy alternative as well, and is a landmark in its own right.

My friend, taking a taxi to all the places you mentioned will be expensive. Taxis here charge by the meter rate, so depending on the time of day and the traffic condition, the fare will add big time.
The best way to get around the city will be by subway. The fare on the subway is only $2.25 one way, per person. However, if you're here for 5 days and you're going to be making multiple trip around the city, I would recommend purchase a 7-day unlimited ride MetroCard for $27 a person. The unlimited ride MetroCard will be huge money saver.
Please note: If you're traveling to New York City on or after December 30, 2010 the fare on the subway will go up by 25-cents to $2.50 and the 7-day limited ride MetroCard will go up by $2 to $29.
I hope this information is very helpful.
Good luck

As a close-by New Yorker, i could propose identifying to purchase a MetroCard-it incredibly is our bus and subway bypass. you're able to desire to purchase a one million day "relaxing bypass". Unforunately, they-manhattan city transit-does not sell relaxing passes for extra desirable than one million day at a time, however the good information is that in case you purchase one, you need to use all of it day devoid of having to spend extra to fill up it. i could additionally propose strongly getting bus, subway and directional maps so as which you will get around; even nevertheless each physique is prepared to be useful, not each physique is prevalent with of their way around.
