No, it's not meant to be taken literally. It's talking about people whose entire life centers around money and getting ahead. They become greedy and the money becomes their god, ahead of everything else. The New Testament has numerous places where it says that money and possessions don't count for anything. What matters is the spiritual things.

There are many levels to this question. I'm Jewish, but I can still help out.
The whole quote is that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter to the kingdom of G-d.
There was a gate in Jerusalem called the needle. It was used by camels on Shabbat. However, it was low and narrow, so a loaded camel couldn't enter the city or leave the city on Shabbat. I
So, for a person rich in material things, they would have to shed their attachment to them in order to enter a spiritual life. It doesn't mean give away everything. Just don't be obsessed with material things that don't matter.
It's a nice parable, as it presents a problem and a solution in a way that would have been easily understood by the people of the time.

He was talking that in general, a rich person would find it difficult to put spiritual things over his material possessions. There is nothing wrong with being wealthy and many were in Jesus day and in the days of the Apostles. What is the important thing for those with material wealth to remember? Paul advised them to be liberal and ready to share.

Some take it literally and expect people to take a vow of poverty upon taking up the cross of christ. Others see it as simply meaning those who love their money more than God can't get into heaven, that is to say those who can walk past a poor person without showing any pity.

What jesus meant was. that a rich person values money more then God. They would rather keep their wealth, then give it up. Because of their vanity, and pride. They have lived a life of ease. for so long. they are not about to throw it away,

One must take into consideration that Jesus did not write anything down, that he may have been misquoted, that whoever wrote the gospels, a generation after Jesus supposedly lived, may have had a poor source of information, may have misquoted, mistranslated, misunderstood the original, may even have made it up. The Bible is literature, not dogma. One can appreciate the text just as one can appreciate a movie, learn something from it, without believing that the story and the action are completely true. It is up to us to interpret both literature and films.

Be encouraged as you consider the following:
Throughout the holy writings we see accounts of men’s lives being prospered with material goods and substance through the favor and guidance of GOD. Included are Abraham; Jacob; Job; David; Solomon; Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon; Cyrus, king of Persia; the prophet Daniel; and Cornelius, whose entire household received the Holy Ghost. The distinction that these men have is not that they were ambitious, envious, glutinous and greedy. Rather, they confessed their dependence and weakness, and willingly placed themselves and their property in service to GOD.
It is not a sin to be rich. However, all are not emotionally, intellectually, psychologically and spiritually fit for the duties and responsibilities that accompany great wealth. As an exaggerated condition, wealth isolates an individual, and separates one to a focused set of concerns. To the extent concern for gain and money (we say, “the love of money”) is at the center of ones feelings and thoughts, they forget the things of GOD, and deny GOD rightful place in their lifestyle, and daily living.
Many developing Christians condemn, and despise the wealthy. They refuse to minister to those who are well-to-do, or to properly prepare themselves to be kingdom ambassadors among the wealthy. These mistakenly think that poverty somehow has virtue, and will automatically secure one a place with GOD. Such must come to understand—as shown in the ministries of Jesus—wealthy men and women are as in need of divine comfort, healing, love, and salvation as any person in poverty. More than this, the wealthy also are privileged to serve in peculiar ministries, and offices as agents of GOD.
There is far more to be said, understood, and spiritually apprehended. (For example, through the Holy Spirit, the lives of every believer embraces both abject poverty and immeasurable wealth. The secret to being wealthy is not what, or how much one possesses. Instead, it’s how what one possesses contributes to right worship of GOD, and to ones own genuine fulfillment. To have true satisfaction from what one has, even though little, one must serve and share with others.) Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful. Be it unto you according to your faith.

No look at all the queens and kings who are in heaven.he meant that if a rich man loves his gold more then God he shall not enter heaven.
Do you remember that it was GOD who inspired and made the Apostels remember every thing? I dont think he can be "misquoted"
