How long does a woman normally continue to produce milk after weaning her baby?

I understand that this will be subjective and vary from woman to woman, however there must be a generally accepted mean.

Is it unusual to still be lactating 6 years after your child has stopped breastfeeding?

Update:

Aimee's Mummy: it's not a full on lactation, certainly no where near enough to feed a child.

TMI....I can still get milk if I squeeze, he'll be 8 in 2 weeks.....I asked the Dr and he said it was ok. It's kind of novel, it reminds me I am a mammal, lol

It has been a long time since my children were breast fed. However, if my memory serves correctly, the breasts will continue to produce milk as long as the demand is there. As soon as the demand ceases, i.e the baby is weaned, the milk should normally dry up within a matter weeks and in some cases maybe some small sign for a month or two. If, after 6 years you are still producing milk, then it is highly recommended, that you seek medical advice. It may well be nothing serious to worry about and the answer could be something very simple, and personal.

I am not a medic, but as a father, husband and grandfather, my advice would be to see your GP as soon as possible and discuss, I'm sure you are not the first mum who has had this problem, be sure that the production/seepage is actually milk and not any form of discharge, but I wouldn't worry unduly your Doctor will sort you out very quickly.

    Good luck.

yes 6 years is a little long, it only took me a few weeks for my milk to dry up after i stopped breastfeeding. you should see your doctor you could have a hormone problem causing you to still lactate.

edit: id say a hormone problem then, i used to leak a little milk when i wasnt pregnant, i have pcos and i was told that could have been the reason. if theres definately no chance youre pregnant again then see a doctor just incase its an infection. good luck.

Hmmm. 6 years sounds like a long time. I weaned my daughter two months ago and if I squeeze my boob, some milk will come out.

Have you asked your doctor about this?

when u r ready to stop breast feeding u r supposed to dry the milk in ur breast. My dr told me to use lettuce, freeze it and place a good portion over ur breast, and to my surprise it worked. But with second pregnancy they said soap was better, Dove is all we used and it didn't work. I had my husband run to the store for my lettuce. lol
