Could it be Autism or just delay?

My son is almost 3 years old. He was born a healthy full term baby, but spent his first year with lots of ear infections, and at 1 1/2 just slightly failed a hearing test. He had tubes put in place a year ago, and has been working with speech teachers for about 4 months. He still is barely using sentences(at least that we understand) I have recently been told he has characteristics of mild Autism. He can be very lovable but is not a big on cuddling. He lines things up alot, doesn't always respond to his name, has a hard time making(he does occasionally make it) and maintaining eye contact, he gets very angry often, he throws things and hits, and is overactive. He also does not play with other children(even my daughter who is 2 year older than he is) He also is a great imaginable and loves I spy books(and is really good at them) and is a definite visual learner. He's never been in daycare or anything other than home with us. I'm not sure what of this is important when asking for others opinions, but I'm curious what other moms of Autistic children think. I don't know anyone with Autism so have nothing to base anything on. If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it, until we can get in with a developmental pediatrition. Thanks so much!

Ok, take a deep breath. Your little boy sounds like a child who has had lots of ear infections and is a bit delayed because of it. He also sounds like a normal, healthy little boy. MOST two year olds aren't great at playing with other children, get angry and hit sometimes and don't always want to cuddle. Since you are concerned you definitely should take your son to the Developmental Pediatrician. The best doctor to diagnose a child with ASD IS a Developmental Pediatrician. Autism is a Developmental Disorder, not a "brain" disorder. A better, but much more expensive option, is a Multi-Disciplinary evaluation at a Developmental Clinic at a major university.

When MY son with Aspergers was almost three he talked ALL the time but only about trains. If you tried to talk about something else he would get upset. He went to Play Group every week and NEVER played with the other children. He would go into the other room and play with the same three trucks every week. He was very routine oriented and would tantrum or withdraw if his routine wasn't followed exactly. It was impossible to get him to wear anything but sweat pants because anything else wasn't "soft" enough. His motor skills were very delayed, he couldn't color and he was very clumsy. He cried a lot and was very "serious".....seldom smiled. His eye contact was nonexistent. I could go on but I think you get the point. This is a kid who was diagnosed with Aspergers, not Autism!

It really could just be a delay because of the ear infections & problems he had early on. He may just need a little longer to catch up to other children his age.

The vaccination & Autism link has been discredited time and time again... And when people immediately go to that it annoys the crap out me.

I really suggest you talk to your child's doctor about your concerns, and see what he/she says... It could be that it is taking him a little longer to catch up.

I have a 3 year old. Where he does speak well, he also did not have any ear issues. He also isn't much of a cuddler anymore. I think that goes with the age. He can also get angry for no reason, again I think it is the age.. I wish you the best.

I do not have children with Autism but know abit about it. I thought my son may have had it as a toddler so, I did lots of research. MY son as many children do had signs of autism. He doesn't have autism but does have sensory issues. Your son does show signs so, IMO you are doing what you need to do, get him evaluated. Then..go from there.

My understanding is..only a neurologist can diagnose a child with Autism. I "think" a developmental ped. has more to do with...development, which he may need but Autism, is a brain "issue". To get a diagnosis...you will need to go to a neurologist. So I may suggest you bypass the dev. ped. and go straight to a neurologist. If you rule out..or get a diagnosis for Autism, you will be one step ahead by going straight to a docotr that can give you a definate diagnosis.

Mild Autistic children can really do well in life with the right thrapy. ANd...my daughter is the least Autistic child I know and she has always lined stuff up. I don't like to make eye contact for a long period of time..it makes me feel odd???? All kids at that age or younger..older also, get angry, hit and throw things and the overactive...well. He is 3! At 3 from what my sons preschool teacher told me...kids don't "play with" other kids, they play along side of them. at 4 they start playing with other kids. All kids are different, especially girls so don't compare him to what your daughter did at 3. My daugther did play with kids at 3, my son did not. He has a great imagination...that is a good thing!

Try putting him in preschool, that may help alot! Get him evaluated by a neurologist! If he does have Autism..it is mild and he will be able to live a "normal" life.

    good Luck.

i'm curious as to why he grew to become into no longer in elementary terms categorized Autistic. because of the fact that that could be a spectrum affliction and could variety from extreme to gentle, it style of feels that it may maximum suitable describe your brother. in many situations the IEP team has an identical opinion upon the label it is the main well-known clarification for tutorial problems. even with the undeniable fact that, an IQ score decrease than 70 is intellectually disabled. A score of sixty 9 could be gentle. In my state the speech-language postpone could be a suitable service, no longer a regular service because of the fact there's a incapacity that has extra result on his getting to understand. each and every student is entitled to life like differentiation interior the college room. even with the undeniable fact that, the curriculum does not be changed because of the fact that each and every student is anticipated to bypass state testing in step with NCLB (No baby Left in the back of). So if a changed curriculum grew to become into the point, then i think for this reason the IEP team went with Mentally Handicapped fairly than Autistic. Then they could use the state testing progressed to fulfill NCLB for intellectually disabled pupils.

I agree with the other posters. It is possible so just get him looked at if for nothing else peace of mind. How is he with aloofness? Does he like to be alone alot and in his own world? Does he fixate on things or play with his toys improperly? Does he repeat things or phrases? Can he answer a question?

He sounds just like my daughter, who is perfectly normal. I think it's just because of his ear tubes...
