what does a jail tattoo mean?

It might not mean anything in a general way, but just as a personal choice because of stars being a fad in tattoo designs, and they are also a typical tattoo design with a lot of history.

There are 5 pointed and nautical stars, and they are prevalent as a tattoo design, as are other sailor designs, like the compos rose etc.

But it could have a local meaning. I did not find anything in well known prison tattoo designs:

And many of the symbols listed above are gotten by normal law abiding people who do not belong to a gang or the Russian mafia, but they got them as a tattoo because they just liked them.

Roddas, just because it says so on Wikipedia doesn't make it true. Calm yourself, man. The teardrop tattoo means different things to different people. It is given in prison to signify how many people they have killed, but that doesn't mean that ALL teardrop tattoos mean the same thing. It's all why the individual got the tattoo and what is symbolizes to them.

Well i guess its kind of self explanatory- It's a tattoo that someone gets while they're in jail. They're not professionally done and in my opinion look like crap.
