How much should I feed my two year old Lhasa Apsos?

I recently got two Lhasa Apsos who are brothers and will be two year old on the 28th of December.

One is slightly smaller than the other but not too much of a difference, to be honest I think in their old house the bigger one used to eat the smaller ones food when they weren't supervised.

The smaller one is Rocko and the bigger one is Blue. Right now we give them a quarter of a tin each in the morning and the same at about tea time/evening. In their old house the woman told us they only got fed once a day, a quarter each but we didn't feel this was enough so we increased it.

As soon as we give them any treats they eat them very quickly so it seems as though they are still hungry. I do understand most dogs will eat and eat until they're sick so that might be why they are so frantic to eat their treats.

My family and I were just wondering how much food they should be given per day?

Also Rocko seems to have smaller teeth than Blue and cannot bite most harder food, we bought them chew toys etc to encourage him to strengthen his teeth but both of them just wreck them.

Blue tends to try and steal Rocko's food when we are not supervising them because Rocko doesn't eat as quick, this can be very tiring to teach Blue not to eat it.

Is there any other way to help strengthen his teeth that you know of?

Thanks for your help!

Dogs will eat until they make themselves sick are also prone to obesity and related health problems. Therefore, it is important to feed the proper quantity to keep them at a healthy weight.

The first thing you should look at is the current body composition of both dogs. Is there a "pad" of fat over the ribs? Is their loin area "tucked up" with a definite waistline where it narrows side-to-side and from the bottom after the ribcage? In dogs of a healthy weight, you should be able to see a waistline from the top or sides and easily feel but not see individual ribs. If the dogs are a little on the chubby side, reduce their food intake and increase there exercise, if they are at a healthy weight, hold steady, and if the ribs can be easily seen, bulk up their diet.

A vet check is in order for both dogs to check on dental health and also to advise you about their proper target weights, exercise, etc. My guess is that "Rocko" has some dental problems that make it uncomfortable for him to chew. When feeding the dogs, do so in their crates or supervise them to ensure that each dog only gets their own food and not the others, do not leave food out but pick up any leftovers after 10-15 minutes.

I feed my Pugs 3 times a day. In the morning, at lunch and in the evening.

Raw meaty bones. Licking up stinky slop that comes from a tin is going to make their teeth and breath horrible. Give the occasional raw meaty bones and your dogs will have good strong, clean teeth

Source(s): I feed my Pugs a raw diet of organs, muscle and bones. They have perfect teeth. My dad recently began feeding his 16 year old JRT raw meaty bones and his teeth have gone from yellow to white, and he doesn't plod around anymore and has energy.

Read what it says on whatever food you're feeding. All bags of dog food have feeding guidelines according to the weight of the dog and different brands give different amounts. If you're feeding a good quality food, you feed less than if it's one of the cheap ones.

Remember the guideline is just that, you often need to feed a little less. It also depends on whether or not your dog gets plenty of exercise. Keep an eye on his weight.
