How do you surf safely on an UNSECURED network?

What are some SIMPLE or step by step procedures I can take to surf safely on an unsecured network? Meaning I do not want my information to be leaked out for a hacker to see. Please don't suggest going on a secured network (will get a negative if you do) thank youuu

    The Internet is unsecured, So unless you're on an SSL (HTTPS) your traffic is not encrypted and sent in clear text. A VPN will encrypt traffic between your client and the VPN gateway, but once unencrypted by the gateway it's in clear text again.
