Where can I find some good Ubuntu or Linux online learning tutorials or workshop?

Ok I installed ubuntu 10.04 on one of my older system and I'm having a hard time to understand it and doing simple task like installing a program is very hard for me to understand...is there any online learning tutorial or workshop out there that can assist me and none that only give the impression that all that they are stating is that "Linux is a magical operating system"

    Hello,

Linux is not as user friendly as windows. You are doing the right thing by starting to learn about it. I just installed 10.04 as well on a spare computer that was too slow for windows. I found that when I had a question, I would "google it" like trying to install a program. There is a ton of free tutorials and you can start with: http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/58852

You should not have to PAY for anything but you MAY want to buy a reference book or check with your library.

The program installation uses an application manager like windows uses msi's. Once the "package" is downloaded, you can just open the application installer and select it. Some programs you have to install at the command line. That is where you use the "terminal mode" which gets you to a command prompt like in DOS. Then you have to issue commands which you will understand once you start using it.

Get on the internet and start googling your questions and you will pick it up. Its not that bad once you get past the learning curve.

    Good Luck!!

You probably already tried to do a Google search for:

    Ubuntu tutorials

And, you were overwhelmed at the number of unrelated hits!

So, here's a neat Google search SECRET, try this instead:

    Ubuntu:tutorials Install programs

"Ubuntu:" limits your search to ONLY websites that mention Ubuntu, AND, "Install programs" limits your search to ONLY websites that mention this, specifically, after Ubuntu is mentioned.

TIP: You will still get lots of Hits, because of Ubuntu's popularity, but also remember if you can't find what you need by the end of page 2 (top 20), change your search terms. Google always displays the most-visited web sites first.

TIP # 2: Ubuntu's website, in this case, as always the FIRST place to look for tutorials, FAQs, Forums, community contributed documentation, AND, their various User Guides (< my favourite learning tool!).

One called Pinguy Linux, it is a distribution of Ubuntu created, using all the things from different distributions to make a complete ready to run out of the box Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. There is nothing to install, unless you want to include other files and software. And yes even the files used in Mint Linux are included. Remember that all Ubuntu remastered distributions are Ubuntu based. The distribution should have use AVANT or Cairo for the dock program, because Docky interferes with using full screen, it wouldn't go behind programs opened full screen. I removed it for that reason. It does make Ubuntu Distributions quite impressive. The whole idea with Linux is to customize it to suit your needs, requirements and your taste as to what it is for you. It gives you the ground work to do this yourself and to make a remaster of the one you build and customize.
