Moving to the DC area to work at Bolling AFB?

I am moving to DC to work at Bolling AFB and i am trying to get some advice on the area to know where to live. I know the area around Bolling is rather unsafe. I am focused on a safe location that can provide decent public transportation or at the most a 30-45 minute commute with traffic if I drive. I am single and price isn't a big worry although i would like to avoid anything over ~1500 monthly. Any advice would be great

Alexandria is close, but can be very expensive. I live in College Park/Hyattsville and there are a number of new affordable apartments in the area. I drive past Bolling every day down 295 and I'm there in less than 30 minutes.
