It reminds me of the time when Howard Dean briefly hit the front in the running for the Democratic nomination in 2004 (I think?). For a while, he was the darling of the democrats, and the republicans were licking their lips in anticipation of running against him, because they knew they'd wipe the floor with him.
In the end, the democrat voters saw this too and went for Gore. If Palin does run, I don't think she'll win the republican nomination. Like Dean, plenty of them admire her, but also they know that she would get beaten by Obama.
So, to answer your question, I think Palin running will help Obama. She's extremely right-wing libertarian. The people she's running against will get pulled out far-right to match her, or else go centre-right to oppose her. Someone far-right will alienate too many republicans. Someone centre-right is their best bet.
Now, what'll happen if Bloomberg throws his hat into the ring???

Back here in the UK there was a phone-in show about what Brits thought of Sarah Palin becoming president. Some of the comments were priceless. For example,
"How can she communicate with the world when she can't point to it on a map?"
"Her supporters claim she is good at the big issues. I reckon she should be selling the Big Issue."
(For Americans, the Big Issue is a magazine sold by the homeless on the streets)
"Having Obama debate with her would be like getting Mike Tyson to fight a toddler."
The whole thing turned into a competition for the most amusing Palin joke. Thank you, America, for giving us a good laugh. Now, go away and find someone normal to be your next president.

She won't make it past the primary I don't think. I guess it depends on who is running against her. I lost a little respect for her when she left her spot as governor, it makes me wonder if she can handle being the President.
I don't believe Obama will be re-elected because even the people who voted for him are wondering why they voted for him at this point.
Alfred are really insulting the intelligence of the British. I think they are smarter than that. You think Obama is intelligent? This is the same the guy who said we have 57 states, in the United States.
Bill Clinton received campaign contributions from the Red Bank of China for his 1996 presidential campaign.

There is nothing to be terrified about with Sarah Palin. Living in big cities, staying connected with things and having brains us liberals are well aware of that.
I seriously feel like when I'm commenting on Palin's inabilities I'm the bully smacking down the retarded kids lunch tray.

She won't be the republican representative. No one is that dumb. Just like the Dems shouldn't nominate Obama.
