I'm a barrister called 17 years ago. I have wide-ranging experience of most areas of law, especially personal injury and employment. I try to provide some expertise in my answers; although some questions are ripe for sarky comment. I also try to bear in mind this is Yahoo Answers, not Yahoo Wild Guess or yahoo 'what I reckon'. As such, I very much appreciate any votes for those answers given with care. PS: Don't feed the Trolls and they will eventually starve.
At about this time of year, politicians in the US elections start talking about 'American Exceptionalism'. What is it, exactly? ?
I genuinely have no idea and I assume I must be in the minority because no-one says to the politician mid-speech: "hey, what on earth does that mean?"

I understand moisture can cause the mirror to blacken and the silvering come off.
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs6 months agoVoting Rules - too important to be left to the individual States?
As early voting begins in earnest, the rules for when you can vote, where you can vote and how you can vote vary enormously from State to State and even (in some places) county by county.
There is considerable concern that some States are using voting rules to favour their party candidate.
Voting is a constitutionally protected right.
Shouldn't the Federal Govt step in and mandate national voting rules so that each State must play by the same rules and removes the ability to 'queer the pitch' for one candidate or another?
4 AnswersElections9 years agoWhat is the bare minimum quantity of classic automobile that needs to survive, to be authentic when restored?
Is there a minimum percentage of the original car that need to be in the finished restored example?
If every single part is replaced/recreated (because it's a very valuable or rare automobile) then it's simply a re-creation.
Does the original chassis have to survive? Or some other part?
Is there a percentage? I've always been curious and I'd welcome any informed answers.
3 AnswersOther - Cars & Transportation10 years agoCan I play DVDs via my Dell monitor?
I have a Dell E176FP monitor (specs below). It is a 17" Active matrix - TFT LCD
Horizontal scan range 30 kHz to 81 kHz (automatic)
Vertical scan range 56 Hz to 76 Hz
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/e17...
Can I play DVD's on it (via a DVD player, naturally)?
It only has a VGA socket input
I've checked out various websites for Scart to VGA cables and they usually have a rider that they do not work with computer monitors.
Very many thanks for any kind assistance given.
3 AnswersMonitors1 decade agoWhat do you understand by the phrase "American exceptionalism"? Is it a force for good?
Recently Pres. Obama has been criticised for (allegedly) not believing in "American Exceptionalism".
Whether he believes in it or not, what is this exactly?
Does it mean America believes is better than everywhere else?
Is it a good thing? Does it have any negative aspects?
It's not a phrase I've come across before but it was used in such a way that the speaker assumed everyone hearing him would automatically know what he meant by the phrase.
PS: this is not a question about Pres Obama's beliefs, but about the concept of A.E.
16 AnswersPolitics1 decade ago"Muslims not all terrorists" shock?
In an effort to get local Muslims to commit crimes, the FBI planted a former criminal posing as a Muslim in a mosque, apparently to incite violence. However, his radical extremist views resulted in the Mosque taking out a restraining order against him.
How do these tactics reflect on the FBI and their apparent world-view?
20 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoJailed for failing to disclose your password to the police - is this a step too far in the invasion of privacy?
A teenager has been jailed for refusing to give his password to the police to enable them to look at the content of his computer.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/oct/05/password-...
Now the police may have had good cause to look at his computer, but suppose you just didn't want the police trawling through your hard drive because you had stuff on there which was private or embarrassing or even compromising - but not illegal.
Perhaps details of a demo you are organising, or your mistress' candid photos or a log of police misconduct.
The offence is failing to give the password, not having bad stuff on your computer.
Isn't this power open to arbitrary abuse?
12 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoWill the Tea Party save or sink the Republican Party?
Is the selection of TP candidates a boost to conservative activism from which the GOP will benefit; or a millstone of crackpots and nut-jobs which will drive moderate voters into the arms of the Democrats?
13 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoThe Tea Party (Iowa) has issued a billboard comparing Pres. Obama to Hitler and Lenin.?
Is this a fair comparison? Can President Obama's policies be said to be the same or similar to those of two of the world's greatest mass murderers?
20 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhat advice do you think Mrs Thatcher will give Sarah Palin when they meet?
Sarah P is apparently hoping to meet Mrs T on a future visit to the UK. Assuming Mrs T has the faintest idea who Sarah actually is, what advice do you think she may give to her visitor?
24 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoImmigration - will the runaway success of the BNP in the national and local elections...?
..mean they will accept the democratically expressed wishes of the British Electorate and just kindly f*** off? Compared to Nick Griffin, in voting popularity terms, Gordon Brown is Barack Obama, JFK and Martin Luther King rolled into one.
7 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhat exactly is it about having access to universal healthcare that some American's find so terrifying?
"The United States is the only industrialized democracy that does not ensure universal health care coverage, with an estimated 36 million Americans uninsured". Reuters as quoted by Yahoo News.
And according to last month's National Geographic, the US pays (per person) at least twice the average of other nations to get less healthcare.
The private medical insurance providers and the NHS both operate in the UK.
So what's so terrible about what every other Western democracy has, that parts of the US doesn't want?
Is it at all relevant that no country has opted to abandon universal healthcare in favour of the US model?
Is it at all relevant that not a single UK party - from the extreme right to the loony left, advocates abolishing or even restricting the NHS?
I genuinely don't get it and I'd welcome some illumination [without the cliched glib comments, pleasee]
19 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoHave you ever instructed or used a barrister in civil proceedings?
I'm interested in what you thought of the service and advice he/she provided? Please note:
1. Not in criminal cases
2. Comment such as 'all lawyers are bast*rds' are very witty of course, but not welcome.
3. Your experiences are what I'm interested in. Not your mates or that bloke off the telly.
1 AnswerLaw & Ethics1 decade agoShould we bring back the dealth penalty for people asking glib questions on YA about the death penalty?
YA is cluttered with the same question asked over and over and over again; the general jist of which is:
"Should we bring back the death penalty for murderers / paedophiles / rapists / terrorists / Piers Morgan..."
What about for moronic death penalty questions?
Actually, maybe this is one? Should I be strung up? Or is hanging to good for me?
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoWho is the leader of the Democrats and the GOP?
This is a genuine enquiry for factual information. Pithy one-liners can pith off.
In the UK, the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition are both the respective leaders of their party. So the head of government (ignoring the monarch) is also always the leader of the governing political party.
So, I'm failry sure (but stand to be corrected) that Obama and Bush are not their respective party leaders.
So who is, and what position do they hold?
