Who is the leader of the Democrats and the GOP?

This is a genuine enquiry for factual information. Pithy one-liners can pith off.

In the UK, the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition are both the respective leaders of their party. So the head of government (ignoring the monarch) is also always the leader of the governing political party.

So, I'm failry sure (but stand to be corrected) that Obama and Bush are not their respective party leaders.

So who is, and what position do they hold?

Update:

So, do I take it from the answers so far that neither party has a single leader, but various leaders who do various things? I.E. You can't identify any one person as the head of the respective party?

As Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Gov. Howard Dean is making the Democratic Party competitive in every race, in every district, in every state and territory, while integrating national and state party operations and standing up for Democrats' core values.

The current chairman of Republican National Convention is Mike Duncan.
