Voting Rules - too important to be left to the individual States?

As early voting begins in earnest, the rules for when you can vote, where you can vote and how you can vote vary enormously from State to State and even (in some places) county by county.

There is considerable concern that some States are using voting rules to favour their party candidate.

Voting is a constitutionally protected right.

Shouldn't the Federal Govt step in and mandate national voting rules so that each State must play by the same rules and removes the ability to 'queer the pitch' for one candidate or another?

Update:

Bad Wolf: Only partly true, surely. Can Ohio opt out of National Air Defense or Civil Aviation?

If States are using the federal system to attack constitioanl rights [as alleged], then the Fed Govt has the duty to step in, surely?

Hence the Equality Acts in the late 1960's.

Update 2:

Dumbbutt - not sure this constitutes an actual answer. I think you may be watching a little too much Fox News. The Patriot Act seems to have slipped both them and talk radio by.

But then it was passed by a Republican white guy.

Barack Obama has already trashed the Constitution with executive order bypassing congress and everyone else. This dictator might as well dissolve the former USA and decide everything for us. The only thing protected now is Barack in that on Dec. 31st 2011 he signed into law that the US military on the Commander in chief orders may arrest and detain anyone indefinitely including US citizens without due process if he and he alone deems you a TERRORIST. No evidence, no checks and balances, no nothing, merely at the emperors discretion. There aren't any states or USA left, it is merely everyone for themselves if you in anyway shape or form disagree with what Barack Obama says or does. Hell can't be more fun than this.

Yes. The problem is, how can we, the general public get such changes implemented? It would also be beneficial to go by popular vote, rather than electoral.
