I am fixing a computer with an intel centrino 498MHZ processor and 256 Megabytes of ram and a 60 gig harddrive?

It is running a pirated copy of windows and the user is very good at finding malicious software. The copy of windows is not upgradeable and won't run a lot of modern software like AVG.

Right now it has one of those "virus protection" programs that wants money to make the computer work right again. The user has cable one, so the internet rarely works. It is necessary to reinstall windows regularly. I want to try a different operating system, but I am not sure which one to use.

Where can I download a free operating system that will work will? Also I want to upgrade the ram to 512, but I get a blue screen saying the bios needs to be updated when I switch out the chips.

Update:

I live in Chubbuck Idaho, if you feel my friends computer is too old I would happy to except a better one from your junk heap. We are running Windows XP on it, right now, but it can not be upgraded, to do many of the things a real copy of XP can do.

Update 2:

Also, Bert where can I get a copy of windows 3.1, how can I put a better hard drive in my dell NX20, and how do I make my Pentium run as fast as my Mac IIci?

How do you expect to make an antique run like a new PC?

Simply put, you are barking up the wrong tree.

A PC running at 498 MHz is a dud, as in almost useless.

256 Megs of RAM is a joke.

Hot OS is a BIG joke.

Why pay for an Anti Virus program when there are so many FREE ones?

    Re-install Windows, what version?

Mebba version 3.1 from the old days, right after DOS was popular.

If you keep fiddlin' around, you'll get more than a blue screen (BSOD), you'll hear a big laugh coming from your CPU.

Stop wasting your (and ours) time.

    ;-)

What are you doing that it freezes? Does it freeze whilst it boots up, whilst the OS so much, while you open a designated software? Try to slender it down a little bit. I might re-set up XP, and now not set up the antivirus application. See if this is helping and repost for those who discover out a sample to the PC crashing. GET MORE RAM!!!
