Is getting a college degree for acting just a waste of time?

I want to become a movie actor/movie director, but I don't know whether I should get a college degree or not. It seems like other actors/actresses went to college but didn't finish. Ex) Sandra Bullock, Zooey Deschanel). Is getting a degree in theatre just a waste of time?

there are quicker ways of doing that than waiting on a four year degree before you can do anything.

a degree isn't going to guarantee you any acting work. if you want to direct or produce then a

degree in theater or film production will be helpful. if you just want to act, take acting classes.

Getting a college degree of any kind is never a waste of time. A full, well rounded education will serve you well for the rest of your life, on and off screen.

The unique thing about acting and directing is that you do not NEED an education in order to pursue it as a career. Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Accountants, etc. all need a degree in order to get hired.

There are many folks out there who have been successful actors without any formal training (either in a university setting or at a conservatory) but a lot do. What they all have is a great deal of hard work and experience behind them.

Acting school is experience and training, the degree is just a piece of paper.

I'm sorry but have you seen the Blind Side or any other Bullock movies? She doesn't need college! You're not Cruise or Spielberg or Cameron or Pitt or Damon or Clooney so I would sit down, shut up, and start studying for your Shakespeare test tomorrow!

If you have plenty of high school plays and community theatre acting experience and are mature enough to earn your own living when you are 18, then college is not needed.

I believe that it is always a good idea to have a college degree. It might not be necessary, but it's good to have as a back-up. You would also gain lots of experiences during college that will add to your character and credibility.

I think it would be worth it if you were going to audition for plays or something, but if it was just a plane movie, then it might not matter. No matter what you decided to do, getting a degree will always help. :)
