Is the sun hotter in the afternoon than in the morning?
Why do people always refer to a hotter sun in the afternoon? What causes this?

the sun is mostly the same temperature, at least as far as the normal person cares on a planet 93 million miles away.
the reaason the afternoon is more hot is because the rays from the sun are more direct. Imagine a piece of paper held at an angle from a light bulb and how bright it would appear and then also how bright it would be if it was held to absorb as much light as possible. this is what happens everyday as the earth spins around on it's axis.

I think you mean why is it hotter in the afternoon, not the sun. Yes, at 12 o clock, the sun's rays are at the highest angle to the ground (90 degrees if you live at the equator, less everywhere else).
It's hotter in the afternoon because during the day, the energy output of the Earth is less than the energy input from the sun. This energy builds up until the sun goes down again. The same principle explains why it's coldest before dawn, but inversed.

in the morning the sun is just rising, and since there hasn't been any light on an area over night then it has had time to cool off. however in the afternoon the sun is high above your head, and the environment has been absorbing the heat since the morning. so with a combination of direct hit from the sun's rays, and the heat absorbed by then environment it seems much warmer in the afternoon than in the morning.
The sun itself will never become warmer or cooler, but it will feel a change in temperature based on the placement of the sun. This is why the equator is warmer than in more northern or southern regions.

The sun is hotter in the afternoon because the higher the sun is in the sky, the more energy per square foot strikes the surface of the earth (or you, if you are in the sun.) Precisely speaking, the amount of solar energy per unit area is proportional to sin^2 a, where a is the altitude of the sun over the horizon.

yes the sun is hotter in the afternoon
'cause the sun rays hit the earth vertically

The sun itself remains the same, however the energy of the sun has to travel through more or less atmosphere depending on the time of day.
