My friend was upset because my family does not celebrate Thanksgiving?
A dear person I became friends with in medical school invited me and my family over for Thanksgiving; I'm going but my great grandpa and grandpa rudely refused and my friend thinks she did something wrong. How do I convince her to forget about it and my elders are old and settle in old traditions - but someone told her that all Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving - that's not true there are over 700 tribes and we don't all have the same traditions - like we all don't live on Reservations or drink or own casinos. I'm just sorry that she got the wrong information, but my elders are at fault and I'm in the middle - HELP any suggestions. thanks all

I completely understand. She probably just feels like it's her fault. Just assure her that it isn't and explain to her the traditions of your grandparents. A lot of people might think that everyone celebrates it. That's not true a lot of people don't celebrate it, just make sure she doesn't feel guilty. :)
Hope I helped! :))

If she's really your friend, Hon, she'll understand. She needs to chill and not take it personally. Just explain it to her again, apologize for them being rude because she does have a right to be upset about that, and if you want to go, great. I'm sure her family will understand. Happy Thanksgiving though! (We're Cherokee, Blackfoot and Choctaw and we celebrate anything if we can eat, lol.)

Just explain to her what their traditions are and that the elders in the tribe follow their own traditions.
