A GPS tracking unit is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data can be stored within the tracking unit, or it may be transmitted to a central location data base, or internet-connected computer, using a cellular (GPRS or SMS), radio, or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the asset's location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when analysing the track later, using GPS tracking software.

The GPS system works by the use of triangulation of different signals. Triangulation is the measuring of time it takes for a signal to leave one satellite and travel to a receiver, this process is then repeated by a minimum of two more satellites. If a satellite is directly overhead the signal will take only 0.06 seconds to reach you. After this has been accomplished by three or more satellites the receiver now knows where it is located. The more satellites available for triangulation the more accurate the location.

Basically you have a GPS device that you can track by it transmitting it's co-ordinates to a receiver that can send those co-ordinates to you over the internet. The device is attached to whatever it is that you wish to track a dog, a car or truck or even a person.
search GPS tracking devices.
