When the warmies talk about sea level rise dont they just need to be educated about erosion, flood plains, etc?

A recent post on YA quoted some alarmist environmental news about how the poor people of Norfolk were suffering from global warming and sea level rising however the article actually said and I quote...

"Like many other cities, Norfolk was built on filled-in marsh. Now that fill is settling and compacting. In addition, the city is in an area where significant natural sinking of land is occurring. The result is that Norfolk has experienced the highest relative increase in sea level on the East Coast — 14.5 inches since 1930, according to readings by the Sewells Point naval station here. "

If they actually read the article they can see that this flooding has nothing to do with global warming theory. So is this typical alarmist behaviour to scare everybody that the seas are rising when they are not as in virtually all cases sea flooding is caused by bad planning, erosion, etc. Moreover there are no conclusive measurements of the sea rising beyond what it always had naturally after all it has risen by 160 meters since the end of the last ice age!

What do the experts say? Well the Royal Society in their latest report say the following on sea level rises

"Because of the thermal expansion of the ocean, it is very likely that for many centuries the rate of global sea-level rise will be at least as large as the rate of 20 cm per century that has been observed over the past century. Paragraph 49 discusses the additional, but more uncertain, contribution to sea-level rise from the melting of land ice."

Paragraph 49 says "There is currently insufficient understanding of the enhanced melting and retreat of the ice sheets on Greenland and West Antarctica to predict exactly how much the rate of sea level rise will increase above that observed in the past century for a given temperature increase. Similarly, the possibility of large changes in the circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean cannot be assessed with confidence. The latter limits the ability to predict with confidence what changes in climate will occur in Western Europe.

So why do these alarmists try to say that the poor people of Norfolk are suffering from global warming related sea level rise when the experts say it's impossible to predict this????

Update:

The question is titled: Should we tell residents of Norfolk, VA to stop worrying about sea level rise?

Update 2:

The RS report provides a great update to the science it can be downloaded here http://royalsociety.org/climate-change-summary-of-...

Update 3:

Trans Am: Thanks for your answer however you are making the classic mistake... note that the Royal Society are very careful and say that it is likely that sea level will rise this is not a matter of fact but theory based on the planet warming by as much as they predict so also look at their report because they say the theory allows for temperatures to rise anything between a few tenths of a degree C to 7.1C by 2100 so sea levels due to thermal expansion can also vary therefore you cant say with any vague theory how much the poor folks of Norfolk, VA should worry about AGW.

A similar global warming media storm happened with Hurricane Katrina when again this was a case of bad planning, erosion and storm surge.

People need to be properly educated about the real issues otherwise there will be a loss of life as mistakes are made.

Update 4:

MTR Thanks for the answer however we can all see when we super impose the historical temperature and CO2 records that they don't follow each other. Sometimes they move in opposite directions for decades therefore the link between the two is far from understood. Global temperatures could fall for long periods again as CO2 increases so would the sea level drop due to thermal contraction?

Of course not! Remember, the Master of Science read the 100 year Gaia History of Earth's Climate and that makes him smarter than Copernicus. Also, his Mom bought him an electric scooter and he now can deliver pizzas with greater efficiency!

Clearly, he has made his best argument for the AGW theory to date! Here is the logic behind it. Let's have some fun, shall we......

    1. The people of Norfolk, VA purchased property on land fill and it is sinking because it is compacting. (now have a spliff) (relax) (spliff)

    2. Everything is relative. So, to the people of Norfolk, VA the ground is not sinking. Instead, the sea level rising.

    3. AGW is supposed to cause the sea level to rise because of an increase in CO2. CO2 has increased.

    4. The Fundamental Theorem of AGW: Correlation between two variables (no matter how wishy-washy) automatically implies causation.

    5. Conclusion: Since the land in Norfolk, VA is experiencing a rising sea level and the theory of AGW predicts an increase in sea level, there is no reason to be skeptical of the AGW theory.

As soon as you embrace the impeccable logic, you will see the light.

I'm going to write an article on how AGW is responsible for the erosion of cliffs in Pacifica, CA.

    http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/loca...

Cliff erosion is directly proportional to atmospheric concentrations of CO2 ppmv. Thank you.

So sea level rose ~6.3 inches (20cm/century x .3937 x .8 century) in the past 80 years then the land settled 8.2 inches, correct? It seems to me that they have to worry about the sea level rise since it's contributing to their problems nearly as much as the settling land fill is.

"So why do these alarmists try to say that the poor people of Norfolk are suffering from global warming related sea level rise when the experts say it's impossible to predict this????"

The report said, "predict exactly how much the rate of sea level rise will increase above that observed in the past century for a given temperature increase." meaning above 20 cm/century. That means they have to continue to worry about it.

It also says, "The latter limits the ability to predict with confidence what changes in climate will occur in Western Europe."

Last time I checked, Norfolk, VA wasn't in Western Europe.

We have good estimates for thermal expansion, which place a minimum bound on sea level rise. It will almost certainly be more (IPCC 2007).

We also have palaeoclimate evidence, which tends to cluster between 80 and 200 cm sea level rise by 2100. See Vermeer & Rahmstorf's paper.

A good chunk of the range is because we don't know how much CO2 we will pump out. Read the paper.

If you listen to all those scientist's predictions, you can also go watch the dky which is falling too. Shouldnt the whole world be suffering form waters rising because the polar ice caps are melting too, but I havent heard of anything happening yet about that either. ALL A BIG HOAX

Bottom line is that the entire issue of AGW is false and the train is running off the track. Just a matter of time until it competely falls apart and scientists (climatologists on the left) will be forever ridiculed for their fraud. Starting next year, the house will hold hearings on this (actually re hold hearings and this time they will be legit hearings). Time is running out for the warmers and hopefully jail will be in their future.

god you guys are stupid, the sea level will rise with global warming, but that isn't the biggest problem, the main problem is that the world is going to heat to the point where it will not be able to sustain life, you can call the scientists 'warmies' or whatever you want but thats a fact, like senator moynihan said, you are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts, it is not an opinion that global warming is going to destroy the environment and all that inhabit it if we dont mend our ways and stop using methods of generating electricity that produce CO2 and other harmful gases, its a fact

sorry but I have to go with dana on this one because he is an expert on sea level rise and all his aliases made him an expert on global warming, i mean why let facts get in the way

If the sea level was receding, alarmist would still blame it on AGW. If it stayed where it was at, it would be blamed on AGW. Their exclusion of normality is a convenient ploy to circumvent reality.

So what's new? People always spin the story to support their prejudices.

"Warmies"? Well, perhaps that's for a warm, fuzzy feeling toward life,

possibly better than cold contempt for cold science.
