Try your own zip code in the estimator below; in my area it lists the labor at $243 - $310. Timing belt replacement is a fairly difficult job and is usually much harder if you don't have air tools and a lift.

Yes, it has a belt. You need it changed at 90,000 miles or it will break. Contrary to what others say, you won't be in a world of trouble if it breaks. 4 cylinder Camrys have what's called a "non-interference engine." That means there's enough clearance between your valves and pistons that they wont crash into each other causing major engine damage if the timing belt breaks. Just get it towed to a shop replace the belt and you're good to go. By the way, that's the 2.2 lier 5S-FE engine used in the1990-1999 Celicas and 1991-1996 non-turbo MR2s. Also Camrys used them from 1992-2001. You'd have a hard time trying to find a more reliable engine.

    x2 pbleek, first best answer!

    to add,

shop hour charges vary greatly. so you'll have to call around locally for an exact on that. usually 60-80 bucks an hour, +-. a lot of +-.

both the 4 and the 6 cyl offered in these years can be done under three hours. but five hours for a shop is not unreasonable.

your main concern would be the condition of the tensioners/springs and any oil leaks. the oil pump and front main crank seal is under there. on the four, the water pump is not.

possible extra parts cost might you encounter?

springs and tensioner(s) for the belt. accessory belt replacement, leaking front main cover (which includes the oil pump, crank, and front pan seals/gaskets).

    however,

the water pump (mounted and driven by the accessory belts, not under the t-cover) is accessable at this time and should be inspected along with the hose to it. if you spring a leak later on the pump or hose, you willl wish you had.

    cheers!

The guys above must be one hell of great mechanics. The shop charge for this job is around 5 hours. Take a look at the link below, no its not an easy job, though its much harder on some other cars.

Should be about an hour however usually the water pump is changed when the timing belt goes because of the ease of accessibility to it, and they usually go at the same time.

depending on labor cost per hour where you are. I know it is $60/hour here. should not even take an hour to do. so somewhere around $60
