back up and moving using an external hard drive?
I have a computer that I believe is about to go out and i wanted to back up all my programs and email, and data, etc.. I tried but my CD burner is not functioning properly and will not let me back anything onto a CD...
So I thought about getting a portable CD drive and started looking for info.. I came along external hard drives.
Can I back up my currents computer HD to an external without backing up the Windows program itself, and then transfer to a new hard drive (with windows 7 installed) using the external HD?
I hope this makes sense and I hope someone can help. I have had the HD in this computer go out once and I lost everything and I cannot go through that again... (Dell did replace the HD at no cost). I have very little knowledge about these kinds of things
Sincerely,
Karla

I found it.. sheesh it says i have only used 59gb on my 500 gig HD..LOL that doesn't seem right

Yes you can back up whatever you want from your computer to an external HDD provided it has enough capacity to store all the data. So cjhoose one that has enough capacity. The external HDD comes with a program on the external HDD that will install a backup profgram on your computer. This progrm will efficiently back up your Hard Drive.

Yes you can do that.
Probably the easiest way is to use Windows Easy Transfer which comes with Windows 7 and can be downloaded from Microsoft for Vista and XP.
Run the Windows Easy Transfer on the old PC. This will copy only your documents, pictures, emails, settings etc to a single backup file. You can select the external hard drive as a location for the backup.
On the new Windows 7 PC, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Windows Easy Transfer and run the wizard again, specifying that this is the 'new' pc. Point the app to your external hard drive.
Done.
