What do Christmas lights signify?

I love Christmas lights as much as the next guy. Actually a little more probably. I am now wondering where the tradition started? Why do we hang Christmas lights outside our homes and on our trees? Is it symbolic of something?

Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Christmas is a celebration of his birth.

    John 8:12

[ I Am the Light of the World ] Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Light replaced candles which used to be put on trees and around the home for Christmas. Strands of electric lights are obviously safer than candles. Candles were to represent the light of Christ and how He lights up our lives and how we should be a light to lead others to Him.

Probably initially, the lights represented the star of Bethlehem, but now, they just symbolize your good cheer and love of Christmas! That's my guess.
