I hate nicknames...what about you?

I don't mind nicknames but I do prefer using somebodies real name.

My dad never uses my full, real name. xD

Well I'm one of the few that agrees with you. I think nicknames are fine but if parents know they are are just going to use the nn there are nns that can stand alone not all but some. I think Matt is one not so much Soph. I think people just don't like change but times are changing. We are seeing more people just use a shorten form of the longer name. In 2009 Alex not Alexander was 82 most popular boy name. Max was 104, Jake 124, Andy 219. Girls Abby 257, Kenzie 449,Lexie 498,Tori 555

I grew up with a short name. I hated not having a 'nick name'. I felt left out. Nicknames let people know they 'belong'. My name isn't able to be shortened. I gave my son a name that could be shortened for that reason.

Max is a sweet name, I love it. However, if he becomes a professional in the future, he can use the name I gave him, Maxwell.

Matt is just silly as a full name IMO.

ETA - I guess you aren't getting what I am saying. A shortened name is a term of endearment.

It's good to give a child options of what to go by. Also, I agree w/ the person who mentioned 'soph'. It's very normal to call Sophia 'soph' if your a close friend. But doesn't Soph Anderson or Soph Johnson sound and look silly?

If someone wants to call their son Matt, they should name him Matthew. Imagine calling a little boy Matt. Seems normal right? Now imagine it on a man. Or better yet, imagine a kid saying 'my dad's name is Matt. What's your dads name?' It sounds bleh...

I completely disagree. My mother calls me Lolly Pop. What kind of monster names their child that? Really, how would you react to someone naming their child Lolly Pop?

Nicknames are informal versions of one's full name. I have a ton of nicknames, Lo, Lola, Lolita, Lomi and of course Lolly Pop. Lolly Pop Johnson is not going to be taken seriously in life, nor is she going to be able to find a job because it looks absurd. Salome Johnson on the other hand sounds like a capable adult, not a child (or a candy). It is something my mother calls me, and no one else because it is informal and playful, not professional at all. I don't know about you but I call my friends and family members silly things all the time because we have a personal and informal relationship. I don't call my boss Kitty, like her husband does, I call her Katherine.

Also, having a full name gives the child power over their name later in life. William can be called Billy by his parents for his entire childhood and decide that he prefers Liam later on. However if he is named Liam from the start and he dislikes his name, he's stuck with it unless he decides to legally change it.

I would never name my child Matt I would name him Matthew and call him Matt. It is more professional and formal. Matt is great for a kid and an adult but they can switch to Matthew if they want to. My friends name is Sophia and we usually call her Soph. Could you imagine naming you kid Soph?

My nickname is Sword because I have a sword logo tattoo in the middle of my chest like a superhero.

do you have a bad nickname? hha i agree i guess. but they might like the sound of matthew, its pretty but nicknames are easier to say and sometimes more loving.

My name is Angelica but my family nickname is Jelly (an- jelly -ca) so i guess id have to say im happy nicknames are just nicknames and not what i have to introduce myself as. Although i don't agree, I do get your reasoning...Alex for Alexander. Idk, to each their own i suppose.
