Why do people not make the best use of the daylight hours?

Most people go to bed around ll pm or midnight and then get up at around 8 am. We are animals best suited to work in the daylight hours, our eyes are not well suited to night vision. Why do we not go to bed around 8 pm and get up at 4 am so as to have all the daylight hours available for us to use? There must be something in our genes that I am missing.

Update:

Yes, but light bulbs work just as well in the early morning as in the evening. And why should we want to go to bars more in the evening than in the morning? Why are we skewed to prefer evening to morning?

I've been up most days by 5.00 a.m. since daylight savings started.

I just need to learn to go to bed earlier! lol.

No it's just people have more fun at night with their friends. You never see a group of friends go to a bar together at 8 am because that would be kinda lame lol. sorry it's just how most people think nothing is in our genes.

the thing you're missing is light bulbs. artificial lighting means that we can take advantage of the night time hours as well as the day.
