Can someone explain the fifth amendment?

The Fifth Amendment deals with the rights of accused criminals by providing for due process of law, forbidding double jeopardy, and stating that no person may be forced to testify as a witness against himself or herself.

"No person shall be held to answer for any capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury"

You can't be tried for things like murder unless it's trial by a grand jury.

"except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger"

Unless you were silly enough to sign up to be soldier.

"nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb"

You can't be tried twice for the same crime, because that makes it more likely that someone will make a mistake and ruin your life for no good reason.

"nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself"

You can't be forced to say things that make you sound guilty.

"nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"

If someone wants to judge you a criminal and screw up your life, they have to do it in court.

"nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

The government can't just take your house just because they need the land for a road or want the house for an army barracks. They have to pay you what it's worth before they can take it.
