What to give as a gift to a bat/bar mitzvah?

I am going to 1 bat mitzah and 1 bar mitzvah in January, but I don't know what to give as a gift. Any ideas? Also, do you wear different clothes for the service and the party later on in the day? I have no clue since I am not Jewish.. lol so thanks in advance for the help!

In general, think about what you would like if you were given a present. Most of the Bar or Bat Mitzvahs that I attended had the following gifts given:

    1) Money - it is traditional to give $18. The letters of the hebrew alphabet have numbers attached to them. Eighteen is the number associated with "to life".

    2) Gift cards - You know what your friends like. Give them a gift certificate to their favorite stores or for their favorite activities.

    3) Music: iTunes cards are appreciated by most teenagers

    4) Jewelry: A popular gift for girls

    5) Sports tickets: Good for boys

Hope this helps you. As for your clothing question, it depends on when the service is. If there is a gap between the service (morning) and reception (evening), then chances are you should wear two outfits. Your service outfit should be conservative. A cute skirt or slacks and a nice top (covered shoulders) is good for girls. Slacks and a button down is appropriate for boys. The reception outfit can be a bit more fun. Think "cocktail attire". Party dresses, sequins and bright colors are all okay. If the service and reception are back to back, err on the conservative side and dress for the service portion of the night.

    Have a good time!

Appropriate Bat/Bar Mitzvah items will also be whatever you might most often get for a pal. If you desire to provide cash, multiples of 18 are correct and viewed auspicious, due to the fact that it's the numerical an identical for "chai", the Hebrew phrase for existence. I additionally grew up in a rich Jewish neighborhood and often gave $36 ($fifty four for near peers) in conjunction with a individual present. Just keep in mind that many households spend upwards of 20k at the occasion and favors, so it's well mannered to provide up to is financially liable for you in my opinion. For example, if you are watching at giving $one hundred however do not desire to head fairly that prime, provide $seventy two. Finally, keep in mind to visit the rite the morning of the occasion. You won't recognize it and you can also think a little bit uncomfortable, however it's correct and well mannered and you're going to in general be ready to take a seat with a few of your different Gentile peers within the again. Don't be intimidated; it is a occasion that the loved ones wishes to proportion with all people, adding the ones external the religion.

    Generally, Jewelry is good.

There are nice masculine necklaces with Jewish symbols, a star, a chai, a torah, ten commandments, mezuzah.

For girls, there is a selection that will boggle your mind!

Search "Judaica", and click on "jewelry", or search "jewish jewelry".

Or just go to thejewishsource.com. Get ideas there...just buy right from them.

Gift certificates at bookstores are good.

    Music is always good.

Anything the youngster is interested in is good.

Yes, whenever you go to a celebration, in ANY religion, where there is a service, then a couple of hours, then a party, you change your clothes. That's not a Jewish thing.

Give them a gift that will last forever. Teach them about their Jewish heritage and the true beauty, privilege and spirituality of being a Jewish man or woman.
