Now up from 100 sextillion to 300 sextillion stars, religious and irreligious what does that mean to you?

Sagan's 100 billion galaxies with 100 billion stars has been revised up. Here's the article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101202/ap_on_sc/us_sc...

These numbers are difficult to grasp. The article said that 300 sextillion is the number of individual cells in every human being on the planet right now.

Does this huge number impact your beliefs about the universe? I'm just curious as to how you feel/think it does and why?

They didn't create themselves. They show how great and awesome and powerful and glorious the Creator God of this universe is.

Genesis 1:16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.

Psalms 8:1- O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?

Psalms 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.

Isaiah 40:25 "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. 26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. ...

28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

I'm not religious and I'm skeptical of religious claims. I find the immensity of the universe mind boggling. That and these numbers to me though don't really say anything about the existence or nonexistence of deities. Although I guess I do feel if as some religious claims seem to state a god created the universe and this planet for us with us as the pinnacles of its creation in its image then scale seems a bit bizarre. What a huge amount of space just for this planet and us. That is not evidence however that one didn't, still we lack real evidence for it being so. So same stalemate. New information also seems to support that the conditions we see here for life on earth actually can occur elsewhere and so those arguments about fine tuning and the statistics of things being just right here by design don't seem that compelling either. The universe is huge and this planet and a number of others happened to evolve in the conditions amenable to life seems even more plausible and parsimonious now then ever before.

I'm still an atheist but it ******* amazes me.

We live in this absolutely magnificent universe and some people prefer to listen to iron age superstition than to actually learn how we got here.

I could not see the gods described by religion being anywhere capable of creating this wonder. I acknowledge it's a possibility but i wouldn't consider it as a probable origin for the universe/omniverse/whateververse.

Sure, i may not know everything and there's still mysteries left not explained by science yet but i acknowledge i don't know and I try to seek the truthful answers using reason and evidence. I don't just take the easy way out and say a supermagical sky fairy did it.

Also, if all the mysteries of the universe were understood, all us future scientists would have no job prospects.

If we are now looking at 300 sextillion stars, then we're looking at an incomprehensible number of planets. This makes it even more likely that life exists on another planet; probability makes that a nigh-certainty at this point.

Modern science agrees that the universe is expanding (just as the Old Testament says 10 times)

It's logical then to observe the number of stars increasing as well as the age of the earth appearing to be much older than it is.

I love it when science and faith in Jesus are shown to be compatible.

There are that many stars in EACH galaxy, and there are that many galaxies. From the stars we have looked at about 50% have planets AT LEAST, maybe 99% so there is no reason to think that is not true for ALL the other stars

Looks like this universe of yours is pretty big, and I hear tell that it is getting bigger. Actually as long as it continues to fit inside of my mind, I am comfortable with it. I like expansion.

It's a shame that we've been born too late to explore the Earth but too early to explore the stars.

I believe in God and read the article you reference. It was comical. In an infinite universe there should be infinite stars, right? Three hundred sextillion would only be the beginning.

And those that put your "faith" in science, think about this: Last week, you would have quoted the "fact" that there were 100 sextillion stars. You would have shown me "proof" that your "facts" are absolutely iron-clad truth.

Today, science let you down, again. Oops, they were wrong about the 100 sextillion stars. It is now 300 sextillion stars. And these are the same scientists you put your faith in. The same ones that bring us "facts" about evolution. Wise up people.

    Peace.

It doesn't really mean anything, because the focus should be on this rock we live on.

Not really it goes with the Bible that says they are innumerable.
