Cathedrals built during the High Middle Ages are not only beautiful examples of great art and architecture but?
served as centers of power, worship, pilgrimage and a focal point for Medieval European society. Describe the purpose, characteristics and provide specific example of great Gothic Cathedrals during the High Middle Ages. Also, are there any buildings in the United States today that serve any of the same purposes (great architecture, centers of power or worship or a focal point for society) as the great Gothic Cathedrals of Europe? Please give an example and explain your answer.

It would have to be any one of several skyscrapers that were built for the purpose and which are acknowledged at least by some to be great architecture. The World Trade Center Towers obviously filled part of the role, which is why they were attacked and were impressive if not great architecture.
The TransAmerica Pyramid in San Francisco probably is a good example - city focus, commercial center, pretty good architecture.
While there are some impressive churches around, the fact that the Church has pretty much abandoned, or been kicked out of, its role as the charity and power center of society pretty much makes the chances of a building being a center of worship. Some results are absurd. Perhaps the Crystal Cathedral succeeds but I don't know how it fits in its location, most pictures are from inside.
