Going active duty from reserves: How difficult?

I was thinking of enlisting in the army reserve while attending college. Once I finish school, I would then transfer to active duty. Now, exactly how difficult is this? Will the reserves try to keep me a reservist? What are the chances there will be open slots for active several years from now?.I have heard mixed opinions on this. I do not want to be weekend warrior my entire career.

Update:

I don't want to be an officer, at least not initially, so that kinda rules out 'Reserve OFFICER Training Corps'.

It will be a lot easier to join from the reserves, to college. What you would have to do, is get a CT (Component Transfer, to the reg force, and they would be more than happy to take you.

  • Why not just join after college? Better yet, see if your university offers an ROTC program, so you can commission as an officer after you graduate.
