Magnetic Property on a data sheet?

I have a data sheet for a ferrite core. It has a table of values, including one which is labled with the symbol mu with a subscript e. It gives a value of 1800.

What is this? is this relative permeability? what is the subscript e? there is no other indication on the datasheet for what it is refering to.

Update:

sorry mr vernon guthrie, but that is the whole question. there is no more information. Other wise I would not need to ask the question, as I would already know what the symbol was for!

** The symbol μe is used to represent Effective permeability.

Effective permeability is usually relative to μ0, and so, is dimensionless.

Its the overall or combined permeability of a magnetic circuit containing

    ferrite and air gap elements.

Effective permeability is seen in some data sheets for cores which have

air gaps. Why is this value of use?

Coil calculations are easier because you can simply ignore the gap

by pretending that you are using a material whose permeability is

lower than the material you actually have.

Scroll down the source to Effective Permeability.

    Please request clarification, if required.

I'm not sure if they will solve this with the info you are giving. You should describe a bit more so that I can answer with more confidence. Just a thought!

    hoped i helped!
