Brother dcp-7040 jams?

Every time I try to print, there is a squealing sound from the front of the printer. The printer signals that there is no paper (there is). When I check the tray, there is always a piece of paper jammed under the separation roller about 1/4-1/2 inch.

I would appreciate any suggestions

Printers are sometimes very fussy about the type of paper you use in them. My HP jams alot when I try to use paper designed for office copy machines. Evidently that paper is thinner. So, I'll have to guess and say the reason your printer jams is because the paper is too thin. Or, it could be the paper is too thick.

Try one piece at a time.

Are the edges wrinkled or curled? Is it used paper?

One of the main causes for paper jams is the presence of dirt, dust, or debris in your toner cartridge. The paper coming into the cartridge would get stuck. So clean your printer regularly. Remove the dust from the printer. Also find out whether any jams occurred in the sensor hole in the upper part of the rotating drum. Do not touch the roller while cleaning. If the oil in your body gets into the roller, the printing media cannot roll over it properly and you can’t get rid of the printer problem.
