A Core 2 Duo, due to the improved architecture, will give a noticeable improvement in performance, however, we would need to know the make and model of your system (HP Pavilion xxxxxx, Dell Inspiron xxx, etc.) in order to find out what upgrades, if any, are possible with your system.

    Edit

Your systems motherboard is Gateway part number 4006181R.

It's actually manufactured by Intel, and the Intel model number for it is D945GCCR.

You can see that it does support Core 2 Duo processors, however it can only use Core 2 Duo's with a Front Side Bus (FSB) speed of 800MHz, none of the Core 2 Duo's with a FSB of 1066MHz or 1333MHz will work on that board, as indicated in this link-

Here's a list of processors that can be used on that board-

Be sure that you update the BIOS before you install the new processor to insure compatibility.

You can pick up the E4700 (2.66GHz) on eBay for $100, though you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Don't forget the thermal compound, I'd recommend Arctic Silver 5.

Here's how to properly apply it.

Check out Toms hardware ( http://tomshardware.com/ ). This forum thread might be a good place to start:

There's more to upgrading than matching the socket. Key to an upgrade is also BIOS support. Intel does offer BIOS upgrades on their site, but they don't make them real easy to fing.

Just find out what socket it is,it will be in motherboard manual. Then search for fastest processor for that socket, and all will be ok.As mother board is designed for what ever processor is going in that socket,be it faster or slower,it will push the voltage threw to deal with it.
