Every persons ear is different in how it heals. I started out just like you and I went up to a 7/16 (one size bigger than 00) and this is what I did. First of all, you'll need to get tapers. They are the best thing to use to go up sizes. And also you'll need Vitamin E liquid tablets. Poke a hole in one using a safety pin or something small (make sure sterilized) and rub the liquid on and around the holes after you put in the next size of taper. This helps your ears heal in a timely manner. Also helps them from ripping. I left each size in for about a month, just depending on the ear. Just remember that patience is key when doing all this. You can NOT rush it or else you will ruin your ear lobes. I have stretched mine out 3 different times now in the last 3 years.I keep changing my mind =P
Good luck!
I hope this helped!

First, a size 16 gauge is not a standard earring size. Sizes 20 and 18 are. If you're wearing 16's and your ears feel fine then go on to a 14, and so on and so forth. You pretty much just have to go off on how your ears are feeling. You may be able to skip a size roo. And also, expect your ear lobes to be sore once you start getting to the bigger sizes. The average wait time between gauges, for me, was about 2 weeks, more or less. You just have to wait until your ears aren't sore, swollen, tender, red, etc. Once they feel perfectly fine, move on to the next size :)
If you're having difficulties putting a gauge in, I heard Vaseline can help, or putting them in during a hot, steam shower helped me at size 2.
Remember,on average, after you pass size 0, you cannot shrink or de gauge your ears naturally. I have heard of some people passing a 00 and having their ear holes shrink, but not all the way, only down to about a 2.

Well eat one up to 8g should stay in for a month
6g down to 0g a month in a half
00g and up 2 months
Use vitamin e as a lubricant to get the tapers in easier
