Seniors,Double Yolked Eggs?

How often do you get double yolked eggs?

Out of a box of six, three were double yolked, maybe more but I had those boiled so couldn't tell.

My gaffer reckons it was about 30 yrs since she last did me one. I'm sure they were pretty common when I was young.I wonder if battery farming had a part in it,or am I mistaken over them being reasonably common?

Update:

At the risk of seeming stupid..How do they know? The farmer, not the chicken

They are more common with older hens that have a higher chance of double-ovulating as they ovulate (kind of like twins). I lived on the farm when I was a kid and we sometimes got double-yolks. My aunt would butcher the older hens and make chicken and dumplings because she said they can die if they try lay an egg that is too large and it gets stuck in the egg duct, which is more likely with double-yoke eggs. I saw double-yolk eggs for sale at a store about 10 years ago, they had them for a year or so at premium prices.

Farmers can hold the eggs in front of a bright light and see if they have double-yokes. They will be larger than the other eggs and that is the first clue.

Double yolks are fine and a small bit of red is fine. I was curious about the double yolks and read that it happens 1 in 1000.

I usually never find double-yolked eggs in a box of standard supermarket eggs. In my city, though, most of the big markets carry entire boxes of double-yolked eggs....they are marked that way & come at a premium price.

During the months that the community farmers' markets are open, I buy eggs from local farmers and then there are usually more than a couple double-yolked eggs in the boxes.

I am a bad girl and continue to prefer the yolks to the whites....it makes me happy to have runny yolks to dip my toast into.

I would rather just not eat eggs than to have to eat those dreadful omelets made with only egg whites....or those disgusting "egg substitute" things that come in bottles.

Besides, doctors have now decided that all the fats in egg yolks is not all bad fat....so I have been smarter than most doctors all along...as I have NEVER given up eating eggs regardless of lying to more than one doctor and swearing I NEVER ate eggs.

Most supermarkets now sell boxes of double yolk eggs . I buy them from Tesco . However the best eggs we ever had were many years ago when my mum used to get eggs from a local farm . They definitely had a different taste and all the hens ran free on the farmyard

When I was a young girl it was very common. My father bartered - his work for our eggs - milk - butter and cream. (1940's & 1950's)

Store bought eggs were first - inspected by what - they called egg candlers.

Most all egg candlers were women. They were housed in large buildings. They/the workers held each egg up to the light - they were looking for (a good egg lol) - meaning - not a rotten egg lol) - they also rejected the double yolk egg.

I'm asumming - that in the beginning - before electric - they needed to light candles to look see through the egg.

I'm betting that is where we get the term. "He's a good old egg" and "He's a rotton egg"

    Just my assumption.

I remember many years ago buying a dozen eggs from the Naafi in Germany and every one was a double.

I only have access to store bought eggs and over the last few years I'd say I get at least a couple every year.

I have not seen one lately. I do remember getting one or two. I like the fresh eggs from the farmer where I used to live.
