Federal government shutting down?

Harry Reid announced today he did not have enough votes to pass a $1.1 trillion spending measure that would fund the government for fiscal year 2011. What will happen now?

What will happen? Not much. All non-essential personnel will either be furloughed or will work without pay for a while and be paid retroactively when the spending bill is finally passed. All essential police, security and military personnel will remain on the job and get paid.

I was working for the DOD (as a civilian) when the government shut down because of failure to pass a budget bill when Reagan was president. We didn't get paid for 2 1/2 months. It was a little tight money-wise but eventually the politicians worked things out and we all got big, retroactive paychecks. The country didn't die while the feds were "on leave".... in fact, it was fairly calm and quiet.

Hopefully, the government will shut down and give us a break from the government.

Unfortunately, since this is the government we are talking about, the government will shut the programs people like and keep the ones that people don't like in order to try to blackmail our representatives into passing a spending bill.

If the government decides to stop delivering mail, I suggest we make privatization of the post office into an issue. If the government shuts down the national parks, we should privatize them.

Maybe they will take a few of their earmarks and paybacks off the tax bill and get it passed. Does anyone really give a darn over making a Murtha Foundation or a Ted Kennedy institute! This should be done with donations by people wanting them rather than put on the backs of tax payers! They need to quit their darn spending period if they aren't necessities!

There are set measures to get the country through til February.

The republicans are beginning to give the liberals a hard time for waiting til the last minute, knowing bills are to be debated. Maybe it'll tie up government til republican take power, derailing anything else liberals wanted to pass.

Unfortunately they will pass a bill that is good for 45 days at current levels.

A continuing resolution, which is what they planned all along. They just wanted to play "chicken" with the conservatives one more time while they could.
