In the original version with Matthau, Mr Green was the train conductor, the guy who drove the train. And he also talked to Matthau, who was the Security Chief of the transit system. Mr Green had a cold from the beginning of the heist and sneezed frequently which "annoyed" the chief of security and stayed in his memory.
