why are the smart cars selling use?

well the answers are good but what i was trying to ask is, a few years ago gas was what $2.00 per gallon and the smart car was being promoted here in the USA. if you wanted to test drive one you had to travel sometimes miles or hours to another city to set it one or drive one. then the only way you could get one was to put money down and wait for months or even years just to get yours. then they get here and yes one answered that they were a fad. and that novelty is wearing off. but as stated in another answer the price of gas is now more that back then and going up and people are still selling them. used and the price is not what you would expect for a used gas saving car. and yes they are built like a race car with a roll cage for a passenger compartment. and will take a bigger crash than most cars. but people are still selling them like a drug on the market. not withstanding gas is 3.00 per gallon and they are all over the place.
